Legion of Super-Heroes (2023)

It's no secret I'm a fan of the DC Animated films. They normally pack more story and character building in an hour and twenty minutes than most feature films do in two hours or more. This one was no exception to that rule.

The story follows Supergirl from her departure from Krypton (mostly for character back story) to the time she gets to Earth. As she struggles to fit in to the world that is far behind technologically, she tries to find her place as a hero. When things go awry, Superman offers a solution to go to the Legion of Super-Heroes which is basically a training academy for supers. Oh, and it's in the 31st Century. From there, she starts her journey and meets up with a range of fellow candidates, including Braniac-5.

It sounds like a lot and it is. The character development for Supergirl and Braniac-5 is solid but some of the other characters get only a couple of their 15-minutes of fame. It's OK, though, as the story isn't as much about them. To me, this felt like Teen Titans Class of the 31st Century. (This is not a bad thing).

I liked how Braniac-5 played into the story. I could have sworn it was Malcolm Gladwell voicing him but I was wrong. He had a compelling character. He is supposed to be off the charts smart but there were a couple of duh moments that could've been tightened a bit.

I can't go into too much detail on the big picture of the film without spoiling it. There was a little nod to Cronenberg in the third act though.

Overall, it was enjoyable and a solid entry. Stay for the after credits as there is a pretty big thing that happens which may lead to the next big story arc for the animated films.

Yes, I'll recommend it.
