Spectre (2012)

Next to last James Bond film with Daniel Craig. This one was far slower than the others but the buildup was pretty solid and may well lead into Craig's final film in a very satisfying way.

The story is that there is a new methodology behind British intelligence which relies almost solely on technology and surveillance. In this, the double-00 branch becomes pretty irrelevant. It's up to Bond, M, Moneypenny, and Q to show just how wrong this idea is. Along the way, Bond must figure out who the big organization is driving things from behind the curtain and who the big bad is.

It is somewhat difficult to write the review without spoilers but here I go. The big non-spoiler is that some of the lore of Bond has been altered to move this film forward. It's almost like a reboot in that manner. It's a good one, but I'm not sure about the way the film ends and if I'm satisfied with it.

One of the fun things is this one had Dave Bautista as a henchman but he only said a single word in his time on screen. It seems like they didn't want Drax to come out in the portrayal of him as a bad guy. He was pretty much a throwaway character but he was a fun foil to Bond.

They did a good job tying together the other three films leading up to this. There appears to be a more nefarious nature to the previous films and it all comes together in the end. Technically, they could have ended Craig's run with this film, as it all ties up nicely by the end. I am curious how they are going to keep the story going in No Time to Die or if they had actually planned on having another in this series of films.

Overall it was entertaining. It was much slower than previous films but the payoff, to me, was higher. It goes beyond the typical formula of a Bond film and instead focuses on the bigger idea of the double-00 program. The team of Bond, M, Q, and Moneypenny worked really well.

Yes, I'll recommend this one but you will need to watch the previous three films to get the most out of this one, otherwise you'll be lost.

P.S. I loved Desmond Llewelyn as Q and John Cleese (in his two films) as Q but this new Q I'm actually digging as he seems more 'real'.
