The story is that Bond is injured in the line of duty and thought dead. In the process, he loses his mojo. When a bad guy comes into play and starts bringing the heat to MI6, Bond is reinstated to take him on. It's up to Bond to save the reputation of MI6 and M.
This one plays off of a theme from a previous Bond film but does so in a much more satisfying way. I do have a small complaint about the actor they chose for the bad guy, as I don't see them in a previous role, but it's only a minor one.
I love that these first three films in the Daniel Craig run have really focused on M and the relationship between her and Bond. It adds a depth to the story which wasn't really there before. This one also digs a bit into Bond's history and it makes him a more sympathetic character both through his orphan childhood and the realization that he is an expendable asset.
This one really didn't have a Bond girl, in the traditional sense. It did have a couple of females to seduce, but overall it wasn't so focused on that side of things.
I will say, the opening twelve minutes of this film are some of the best action sequences in ANY film, let alone a Bond one. I honestly wonder if they helped convince the writers of John Wick that fast-paced action could be done in an edge of your seat manner. If there ever was a master class in how to do an action sequence right, this was it.
One thing, however, is that they appear to have really blown their budget on the opening and closing fight so the rest of the film was more of a slow burn to get to the end. Yes, there were moments of action here and there but it wasn't the typical faster pace of a Bond film.
Overall, this one is high on my list. It has all of the right elements and it really is necessary to recognize how fantastic those first twelve minutes are. Heck, if you ever really wanted to get into the Bond franchise, just watch those minutes and you will be sold!
Yes, I'll recommend this one.
