Quantum of Solace (2006)

Another of the Daniel Craig films in the James Bond Franchise. Casino Royale really stepped things up so it would be difficult for Quantum of Solace to follow suit. Fortunately, it did a decent job. Not great, but decent.

The story continues almost immediately after Casino Royale ends (which is pretty much a first for the series). Bond is upset about the fate of Vesper in the first film and he's looking for vengeance. The bad guy is trying to overthrow third world county governments, all the while snatching up large swaths of seemingly useless desert territory. Bond learns there is a bigger picture and must stop the bad guy, as always.

First up, let's talk about the bad guy. He wasn't menacing in the least. He was one of the most 'tame' bad guys in the entirety of the Bond films. Heck, I could have beat him up! This was one of my biggest gripes with the film EXCEPT, it could be just to show that he was a pawn in the big picture and a throwaway character.

I also don't like how, in the last few films, MI6, particularly M, gives up on Bond at the drop of a hat. She seems to fire him or take away his status every chance she gets. I know where it goes from here but if I didn't, it would seem very out of character.

The Bond girl was beautiful, as expected. She played her role and played it well.

There were some excellent action sequences in this one.

I think the reason I call this one just 'decent' is that it didn't hold a candle to Casino Royale. That and the director made some really poor choices on editing as he gave us ADD theater. Honestly, it would blow my mind on how many cuts he made. He couldn't stay on a shot for more than one second before changing to a different shot. The action sequences were good but the quick change of shots was distracting and annoying which took away some of the enjoyment for me.

Overall, it was still better than a lot of the franchise. I know Skyfall brings it up another notch so there is hope.

Yes, I'll recommend this one.
