Octopussy (1983)

The next in my James Bond marathon. This one was a more traditional James Bond film. The only odd was that there wasn't a typical Bond girl.

The story follows Bond as he tracks down a priceless smuggling ring (which I'm not really sure why the British Secret Service is involved in it in the first place and the same point is even made in the movie!). Anyhow, there is a plot but a Russian general to detonate a nuclear bomb. Bond must stop the bad guy and save the day.

There was some hokey nature to this one but it felt like more of a Bond film than the prior two. Roger Moore gets to use his charm and wit to tell some dad jokes and throw around his knowing grin. There was a decent bad guy as well. Not great, but decent.

One thing I've found fun is that, over the course of the franchise, Q gets in some of the best one-liners as he deals with James Bond's immaturity. I always get a laugh when Desmond Llewyn is on screen.

There were some eye rolling scenes in this one. One of the things I found ridiculous is that James Bond apparently doesn't know how to use a telephone. A bomb with a 4-hour timer is headed to a location, which Bond knows, and because a lady is using the pay phone, he decides instead to get to the location by car. Ummm, it's not like that was the only phone in town! The other eye roller was that he's got a very limited amount of time to stop the bomb (minutes), yet takes the time for a full costume change as well as putting on professional clown makeup. Ummm, yeah.

Overall, however, this was a fun, average Bond-fest and I enjoyed it more than the prior two.

Yes, I'll recommend this one.

P.S. Stunt people are CRAZY!
