The story in this one is that SPECTRE wants to get their hands on a Russian code machine but don't want to put the legwork into it so they plan a trap for James Bond where he will basically do the work for them and then they can just scoop it up in the end.
This time the Bond girl actually has a role other than standing there and being beautiful. This time she is a Russian agent who is unknowingly working for SPECTRE but believes she is supporting her mother country. They also don't have her walking around in a bikini for a large portion of the film.
James Bond is there to do what he does best, be Bond. He doesn't sleep with nearly as many women in this one. He does, however, get to use a range of gadgets provided by Q (first appearance of Q). He also flirts with Moneypenny which is the norm. Oh, and he has his quips (dad jokes) but they are pretty raw so most don't really land, IMHO.
Overall this one was more fun than Dr. No which had established the series but this one took it and started building the commonalities for the series.
Yes, I'll recommend this one.
