Diamonds Are Forever (1971)

The seventh in the James Bond franchise and the last of the 'regular' Sean Connery ones. (I say this because he returns 12 years later for a one-shot redo of Thunderball). This one returns to form after the Lazenby one was panned by critics and fans.

The story is that Bond must infiltrate a diamond smuggling ring and figure out what they are up to. Along the way he finds an old enemy, and some new ones. No secret lair this time.

One thing that drove me crazy is that in You Only Live Twice, Blofeld is finally revealed and is played by Donald Pleasance with his sidekick, Henderson, is played by Charles Gray. Then, in On Her Majesty's Secret Service he is played by Telly Savalas. Then, in Diamonds Are Forever, Blofeld is played by Charles Gray. C'mon, how hard is it to maintain SOME semblance of continuity, especially since M, Q, and Ms. Moneypenny are all the same actors for the majority of Bond films!

The story was a little silly in this one. It had to do with using diamonds to power a super space laser (not really a spoiler). One thing that was cringeworthy was how bad the explosions, and there were a lot of them, were. The screen overlay was really bad and made them look comical, rather than menacing.

I did like the characters of Mr. Wint and Mr. Kidd. They were fun minions and I wish they would have been in more Bond films.

Overall it was more entertaining than On Her Majesty's Secret Service but that isn't saying much. It was still a fun Bond film, regardless.

Yes, I'll recommend it but you don't need to rush to see it.
