Casino Royale (2006)

And so begins the most recent Bond of the franchise, Daniel Craig. This is also when things start to flow a bit better because the stories are more intertwined.

The story is about a apparent bad guy who needs $110 million to pay back an African gang. To do so he plans on using his smarts to win at high stakes poker. Of course, James Bond must join in the game as well to stop him. Apparently people really want their money!

The franchise takes a new direction with Craig as he is more serious. There are very few quips and he's straight to the point about getting the job done. People give him grief because he's a blonde Bond but, honestly people, get over it.

The action sequences are really well done and the music really helps bring home the point. You can also tell that these Bond films stepped up the budget on the action.

One thing that was disappointing is that, for the first time, there is no Moneypenny or Q which made me miss them. They have been small parts got for the last 22 films so to remove them entirely seems like a disservice to their memory.

Overall, however, it is one of the strongest Bond films and the turn to serious seems more true to the character. Dad jokes and gadgets are fun but really, he's a trained assassin, how many jokes do we need?

Yes, I'll definitely recommend this one.
