Significant Other (2022)

Doubled up on horror / thriller films today and decided to check this one out. This one is a Paramount+ original starting Maika Monroe who I've seen in three different things recently.

The story is about a couple who are going on a multi-day nature hike somewhere near the ocean. The goal of the guy is to ask the girl to marry him but not only does it backfire, she also has a panic attack due to her anxiety. The rest of the film is them so being together but getting past the awkwardness. Oh, and something is in the woods and causing havoc.

I'm kinda torn in this one. It tried to be a Jennifer Kent film but didn't quite get there. I think the big thing is that after seeing three Maika Monroe films in recent weeks, I realize she is not very good at delivering any scenes with emotion. If you want a deadpan, no emotion, cute girl, she's great. But if you want any acting that requires more than just looking pensive, it's time to look elsewhere. The boyfriend did ok in his role.

The thing going for the film is that it is split up in a way that throws a kink in the standard formula. It sorta works but it is the last little twist that was the most compelling. This is where my Kent reference comes into play.

Overall it had some moments here and there but if it weren't for the last payout, it would be an easily forgettable film.

I'll recommend it but only half-heartedly.
