Saw IV (2007)

Next in the marathon and the last one I think I watched when it came out so everything from here out will be fresh. It's also a huge drop in quality from the first three to this one.

This one sorta follows a SWAT guy, an FBI team, and a detective. The SWAT guy is being tested by a now dead Jigsaw, for some reason that is never truly made 100% clear. The FBI team is trying to figure out who Jigsaw's accomplice, outside of Amanda, might be since they think he needed some more muscle to get things done while he was alive. Anyhow, things happen, for some reason, and deaths occur.

This one strayed far from the first three. The first movie was fairly clever in how it tied in the story. The second movie was still mostly clever. The third movie started swapping gore for cleverness. This one just threw out the clever and went for gore for the sake of gore. It tried to give some backstory as to why Jigsaw became Jigsaw but it wasn't really very logical. It was kinda the flip switch of Anakin going from being a little bad to a youngling murderer in two seconds flat.

I was overall disappointed with this one. It's clear that the film switched to shock value, rather than a deeper story. They attempted to have a story but it made little to no sense. That and the characters were all pretty idiotic, in general. They KNOW they are going after this 'mastermind' who makes traps yet apparently they just brain dumped that information and entered rooms and such with no hesitation. They at least tried to show a robot going in first but then threw that idea out the window.

Another thing is that the rules no longer mattered. It was introduced in Saw III but this time there seemed to be no rhyme or reason. Oh, and one of the setups was done in a hotel room which, before they addressed it, I had the same question and the answer was pretty idiotic.

No, I will not recommend this one. It just strayed far too far from the formula and turned out being boring, if anything else.
