The show centers on a dandy who decides he wants to become a pirate so he has a ship built and goes to sea. Thing is, he's not got a mean bone in his body so piracy seems like an odd choice but he's dedicated to becoming 'The Gentleman Pirate'. Him, along with his ragtag crew of misfits, become one of the most mismatched, non-pirate like group on the seven seas. Eventually they run into Blackbeard (Taika Waititi) and they end up teaming up as Blackbeard wants to be accepted in high society while Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby) wants to become accepted as a pirate.
The first season was entertaining. There were some good laughs here and there. It could use some tigthening up on the scripts but the core of the show is one that was fun. People will likely throw a fit when they say it is 'woke' because there is a not-so-little recognition of pirate homosexuality. Instead, it was fun to see the dynamics along the way.
I do have a complaint with the season finale, as it felt very different than the rest of the season. The way they left it felt like they knew they had to change things up but it also seems like it will change the tone of the show.
Yes, this is a fun and lighthearted series. I would recommend it as long as you aren't one of the aforementioned whiners. HA!
