Curse of Chucky (2013)

I was a little surprised, seeing the Rotten Tomatoes score, that this one did so well in ratings. It wasn't a horrible film, by any means, but it wasn't nearly as good as some of the others. I think one of the big things in this one is that it tried too hard to be a horror film rather than the horror/comedy that it is meant to be. It's like it tried to correct course but, in the process, overcorrected and didn't quit work because of it. The story in this one is that Chucky is sent to a house in the middle of nowhere occupied by an older lady and her paraplegic daughter. A package, containing Chucky, arrives and shortly thereafter the mother dies of apparent suicide. The sister and her family (and nanny) come to help the daughter. (Side note: The botoxed lips of the sister were extremely distracting). Deaths happen. There is something to be said about giving a bit more backstory on Chucky and why he is at this particular house. Brad Dourif gets to be human again, in some flashbacks, so that was fun. The paraplegic daughter is played by Fiona Dourif, Brad's actual real-life daughter, so that was fun. To me, it was just that it tried too hard to be 'scary' which, with the premise, has never been the key focus. The concept of Chucky has always been one that, yes, he's a killer, but there is also some playfulness to his character. This one failed to capture that second part. Oh, I almost forgot, they changed the look of Chucky as well. The animatronics weren't as clean and it didn't 'look' like him. For the first four films he had a specific look but the change was distracting. I'll still recommend it but not as highly as some of the others. There is a post-credit scene that sets up the next film, so don't miss it.
