Cult of Chucky (2017)

First time through on this viewing and ending the original Chucky run. They ended on a good note as this was one of the best in the franchise. I'm debating putting it above Bride of Chucky, but it's darned close. The run of Chucky films (with the exception of Seed) was much better than I remember. There was a solid continuity between the films (scratch Seed) and there was some good horror/comedy in them.

This one focuses on Nica, the paraplegic from Curse of Chucky. She is now in an insane asylum and is seen as a schizophrenic who murdered her family and blamed it on Chucky. In her time there, surprise, people start dying.

The good thing about this one is that there is a question as to if she actually IS the killer or not. Much like Curse, there is almost a question in the air about her sanity and if Chucky actually did these killings. It could go either way and it follows through on this film. There are moments where it plays out to where you start questioning if the entire idea of Chucky coming to life was actually a myth the entire time. That's one of the key features that makes this one entertaining.

I still have issue with the look of Chucky in this one, as well as Curse. They changed his face so he looks too 'round' and 'chubby'. There was more of a menace in the prior five films. This one was just too 'clean'. It isn't to the point to where it detracts from the story, but it is distracting after how good it was for the first several films. (I'll probably have a much bigger complaint after I watch the reboot next).

Overall this was one of the top of the series. Unlike other cheesy horror franchises, this one did a good job of keeping things on track and relying on its history. I wouldn't have expected it from this series but it was a lot of fun to watch them back to back and see them keep that continuity. (I wish more franchises would do that).

Yes, I'll recommend this one with no problem.
