Donnie Yen takes on the role of Ip Man, a Chinese martial arts master of Wing Chun. It is based upon a real person who ended up teaching this school of martial arts. The movie makes it seem like it was seen as 'girly' to study under this method but it's used in a lot of films these days. The big recognition is that Ip Man trained Bruce Lee.
It was fun to watch Donnie Yen again as he is pretty badass. He moves with fluidity and does so with a swagger. It's fun to watch him kicking butt in the film. You can see the same intensity in Bruce Lee.
The story was interesting as it showed Ip Man's life. He was pretty well off until the Japanese invaded in World War II when he and his family had to scrape by, like everyone else in their medium-sized village. Along comes a Japanese general who studies Japanese Kung Fu and ends up challenging Ip Man. Much more than this and I'm giving spoilers.
It is a fun martial arts film. I look forward to watching the rest of them and The Grandmaster, which I just picked up this week.
Yes, I'll recommend this one without hesitation.
