The Ladykillers (1955)

Today's movie of the day = The Ladykillers (1955). I watched it because it has Peter Sellers in it and I've only ever seen the remake with Tom Hanks before.

This was a mostly enjoyable one. It wasn't this brilliant comedy that the description on iTunes gave it, but it did have its moments. It starred Sir Alec Guinness, Peter Sellers, and Herbert Lom. This was about eight years before The Pink Panther films yet got together Sellers and Lom.

It took me a few to recognize both. Sellers was younger, chubbier, and had neither a moustache or French accent. Lom had less hair and played the mean guy so wasn't as recognizable.

The story is about a group of five thieves who steal some money in a heist. They plan the heist in a rented room in the house of a little old lady. Even though it looks like they will get away, the wrench in the plan is the little old lady who figures out they are the thieves. Thing is, she's such a nice little old lady the thieves find it impossible to kill her.

There is some subtle comedy in here. There is also some straightforward comedy, particularly in regards to One Round, the giant thug of the group. The idea is that these hardened criminals have a soft spot for the old lady.

Yes, I'll recommend this one. It's not a fantastic film but it's got a lot of fun elements. I liked this one better than the remake.
