Django Unchained (2012)

Today's movie of the day = Django Unchained. Getting closer to the end of my Tarantino marathon and the hits keep coming.

This one is close to my favorite of his but the runtime just kills me. At two hours and forty-five minutes, it does have a couple of parts that linger longer than they need to. There are very few movies over two hours that I am 100% OK with. That being said, even with the long runtime it does move forward at a decent clip.

Christoph Waltz was the star again this time around. I mean, Jamie Foxx was great in his role, as well, but Waltz just draws me in as much as he did in Inglorious Basterds. Both outshine Leonardo DiCaprio's performance, IMHO. Oh, and who can forget Samuel L. Jackson in this role, one of his best.

The story focuses on a German bounty hunter and ex-slave Django Freemen. After befriending each other they go on bounty hunting adventures together with the ultimate goal of buying Freemen's wife from slaver, Candie (played by DiCaprio).

This is another clean edit from Tarantino. The music, while unusual in places, did a got job of fitting the mood. The background scenery, i.e. landscapes, were also a part of the film like an old John Ford film.

Aside from the runtime, everything works. It came together well and was a depressing, yet solid, viewing.

Yes, I'll recommend this one with no reservations. (It does get pretty bloody in places)

P.S. It had the one and only John Jarratt who plays Mick in the Wolf Creek films!
