Barry Seasons One Through Three Review

Season three just ended tonight and I've got thoughts but first, the overall series so far...

Season one and two were excellent. They balanced humor with drama and made a unique series. They were one I thought I could get Lisa on board with so I watched season one and immediately watched it again with her.

The show follows Barry, an ex-military sniper who has since got out and is an assassin for hire. In one of his missions he is meant to assassinate an actor but Barry gets pulled into acting classes and finds a love of it. All of the while he is questioning his role as an assassin and wants to change... starting now.

Along the journey he runs into some great characters and craziness ensues. Barry really isn't a good guy but outside of his assassinations, he is a somewhat withdrawn character.

Anyhow, seasons one and two had some humor interspersed in the show and Bill Hader took on the role well. We just finished season three and both Lisa and I felt there was a hard turn in the tone. That humor from previous seasons was removed. It then just became a dark drama more than a dark comedy. It left us both scratching our heads.

Season four has been approved. We will likely continue to watch. I'm just not sure if season three was a glitch or if then continue with the morose. One of the joys of watching Hader is that he plays the balance of comedic and dramatic so well that to lose that comedy would also result in me feeling let down. We'll see.
