Four Rooms (1995)

Today's movie of the day = Four Rooms. I watched it because I'm watching the Quentin Tarantino films and he has a quarter of the film under his direction.

This one stars Tim Roth and a range of other people from Madonna to Antonino Banderas. There are four different sketches with four different themes that don't really intersect (with one small exception). The common factor is that Ted the Bellman is prominent in all four.

My complaint is that it seems not one of these directors communicated with each other about the direction of the film. Yes, it deals with different stories but the film doesn't know if it wants to be dark, dramatic, or comedic. The flow was completely 'off' which detracted from the whole.

I watched it for Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino's directing but neither of them could save it. Tim Roth did the best he could but, again, there didn't seem to be a direction which hurt the film and his character. It's like he was going for a Buster Keaton or Charlie Chaplin kinda approach (and it actually would have worked much better if he didn't have a speaking role).

The segment Tarantino directed had some of the feel of his work but it just felt flat to me. Rodriguez's story was not very good but the ending was at least somewhat entertaining.

Overall I would definitely NOT recommend this one.
