A Simple Plan (1998)

Today's movie of the day = A Simple Plan. Continuing my Sam Raimi run with this one I saw a long time ago but felt it was time for a rewatch.

I still like this one. It's not a feel good movie, by any means. It's gonna leave you bummed out. But it's well done in its execution and the acting is pretty darned good. It also makes me miss Bill Paxton (RIP).

The story is about a trio of guys, two brothers and a redneck friend of one of the brothers, who find a crashed plane in the middle of the woods. Inside the plant is $4.4 million dollars in cash. They figure it's drug money and to keep it but to sit on it until the plane is found by someone else. That way, they can see if anyone is looking for it. From there things just take twists and turns and it gets darker and darker.

This is a definite departure from more traditional Sam Raimi films. There were a couple of very quick scenes which are more of his M.O. but overall it has a very different feel which is good as this film wouldn't have worked with the over-the-top Raimi scenes from his other films.

This one is also scored by Danny Elfman but it had its own tone and barely sounded like him. Side fact: this movie stars Bridget Fonda who would end up marrying Elfman.

Overall it is a solid piece of film. The pacing is good, the acting is good, the cinematography is good, the soundtrack is good.

Yes, I'll recommend it without hesitation but be aware you're gonna need to do something to cheer up after you've seen it. :)
