The story is set in the near future (although it didn't really need to be) and two guys are driving to a work camp. In the process they get sidelined in the desert and happen to find a massive chunk of gold. It's so big they can't move it so one person has to go get an excavator.
The movie is almost entirely set with Efron's character holding off against the wilderness and elements to protect the lode.
I'll say, I never expected the future's biggest problem would be a shortage of sunscreen. (No, not really). The makeup team did a great job though as Efron looks worse and worse as time goes by!
There was one thing that was supposedly a twist but I figured it out fairly early. It's OK though as it doesn't detract from the film. It was a little slow paced but it paid off.
I do have a minor complaint about the color palette for the film. Yes, it's the future. Yes, it's the desert. But they turned up the contrast a bunch so things seemed overly washed out. But this is only a minor thing.
Yes, I'll recommend this one. It really showed that Efron can act. The story was compelling enough and it really dug into greed and what people will do for it.
