'Breaker' Morant (1980)

Today's movie of the day = 'Breaker' Morant. Another Australian film in my continued journey.

I liked this one. It started out a little confusing as I was trying to figure out the characters but by about mid-film I got it. The acting was solid.

It deals with the a British/Australian forces in South Africa in the Boer War against the Dutch in 1901. (Near the height of imperialism in Africa).

The story focuses on three soldiers who are being held trial for the killing of six Boer prisoners of war and a German missionary. Two of those accused were Australian and one was a Brit who had been in Australia for fifteen years so was practically seen as an ex-patriot.

It was an interesting film as it's clear that the soldiers were never meant to get a fair trial. Their lawyer was hired the day beforehand and was not a criminal lawyer. That being said, he did the work well and presented a good case (considering he had never done so before).

This is all based upon a true story and was written about in a book titled Scapegoats of the Empire: The True Story.

It was interesting, especially from a historic perspective. It looks to continue the idea that the British saw the Australians as nothing more than ruffians.

Yes, I'd recommend this one. It's streaming on HBO Max.
