Ben (1972)

Watched the sequel to Willard this morning. Prepare for the after school special review.

The story is about a boy named Danny who lives across the street from where Willard lived. He is a loner and doesn't have any friends so when Ben comes around, he begins talking to the rat and becomes friends with him. Meanwhile, the police are searching for the rats as they have killed yet again.

The reason I say this is an after school special is that it is so PG it felt like it should be on TV to teach us a lesson about befriending vermin. There is also the idea of making friends, Danny having to have a heart surgery, and more. It feels like I should have learned a moral lesson from watching this film.

This one is also ripe for an MST3K riff as I found myself LOLing at certain points. The ineptitude of the police force was staggering. Then the extreme overkill of a massive tactical team in the end was laughable. Yes, Ben is a smart rat but talk about sending in a nuke to do the work that a BB gun could do!

Overall, it still had some fun moments but they lost more of the 'creep' factor of Willard. I think it was because both Willard and Ben were creepy. In this film, Danny was just pitiful. They certainly upped the level of rats in this one though!

I would sorta recommend this one if you want a cheese-fest that will give you a few groaners and chuckles.
